About Us

Word on the Street (or WOTS) is an outreach initiative to help women involved in prostitution in Wynberg and Kenilworth, Cape Town.

Our Vision

To provide a hope-filled journey from prostitution to new life in Jesus Christ

Our Values

The love of Christ compels us to pray, speak God’s truth, offer belonging and family, empowering women trapped in sex work with commitment through struggle, while partnering with others in Christ.

Pray in the power of the Holy Spirit

We keep prayer central, trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit for step-by-step guidance, to break the strongholds of addiction, for healing and for restoration. The battle is fierce but, God calls us to stand firm.

Philippians 4:6
Ephesians 1:18-19
Ephesians 6:13-18

Speak God’s truth
and listen

Knowing that the Word of God is living and active, guiding us in real and relevant ways, we commit to: listening to God and to the women, and speaking truth into their lives. We know (declare) that it is the truth that sets us free when becoming disciples of Christ. Faith comes by hearing the word of God.

Romans 10:17
Hebrews 4:12
Ephesians 6:19

Offer God’s love, belonging and family

By showing love, we invite the women trapped in sex work into God’s family. Without belonging, there will always be brokenness. We encourage the local church to be welcoming and for each woman to find their place in the body. We are committed to working together as a team and to model loving relationships.

John 3:16
Hebrews 13:2
1 Peter 4:9
Psalm 133

Commit to a messy journey

We recognise that leaving a life of prostitution and moving into the light is complex. We are committed to the journey for the long haul. There will be trials and temptations so we commit to accompanying women on this new journey, one step at a time, towards the adventure with God, which is ours in Christ.

3 John 1:6
Luke 15:11-32
1 Peter 1:5-7

Empower each woman to make hope-filled choices

We seek to speak hope, share opportunities and encourage each woman to take responsibility to choose the next step. We are careful not to foster dependency, but help build confidence, restore dignity and grow each woman’s identity in Christ.

Galatians 3:28
Colossians 3:11
1 Timothy 4:12
2 Timothy 2:2

Recognise that salvation comes from Christ and not us

This is Christ’s ministry, so we encourage each woman to put her faith and trust in Him. We are committed to intentional and holistic discipleship. As we respond to practical needs, our trust is in Christ and his saving power.

Romans 5:8
Romans 6:6

Partner with the local church and key organisations as we journey together

As members of local churches, we commit to working together in God’s Kingdom, so we can encourage one another, grow together and collaborate. This, so as not to duplicate efforts, but rather to be stronger together.

Colossians 3:11

Our Teams

We are a team of volunteers who put some time each week into the ministry. We’d love to grow our teams to spread the work load. Contact us if you’d like to support with free time or if you or your church would like help support some full time staff.

Prayer

We keep prayer central. There is an active online prayer group through which you can receive updates, join online prayer meetings, pray during team outreaches and pray for women in rehab and followup.

If you would like to be a part of the prayer group, send us your details and we can include you.

Outreach

One evening a week, small groups of men and women walk Main Road, meeting and building relationships with women, sharing God’s love and praying with them.
The interaction is usually relaxed and natural.

The women are invited to monthly outreach dinners, which provide a warm and safe place to get to know each other better. We encourage house churches to help with meals and assist with hosting dinners.

Follow Up

Once a woman expresses that she would like to leave prostitution, we support her on the journey. This generally involves finding a safe shelter and rehabilitation from substance abuse, encouraging her to attend a local church, ministering to her, and helping prepare her for work.

Opportunities for involvement include assisting with healthcare, counseling, ministry, transport, preparing CVs, sharing of skills, tutoring, job seeking, mentoring and more, among the many areas of holistic rehab.
